Santa Sofia

Lugana DOC, Santa Sofia 2018

Santa Sofia

Lugana was already known at the time of ancient Rome, so much so that the poet Catullus sang its praises, drinking it abundantly during his stays in his paternal villa in Sirmione. The conferment of the DOC dates back to 1967: it was the first DOC in Lombardy and among the first in Italy. The late master Luigi Veronelli wrote: “Drink your Lugana young, very young and you will enjoy its freshness. Drink it for two or three years and you will enjoy its completeness. Drink it ten years, you will be amazed by the composed authoritativeness ". And in fact Lugana - which takes its name from the ancient toponym of the area, that is Lucana, a term that could derive from the Latin lucus, bosco - is like this: simple in its basic version, structured and complex as the years go by.

Production area

Lower Lake Garda. From vineyards with clayey soils mainly of post-glacial limestone nature, located in the municipality of Peschiera del Garda.

Trebbiano di Lugana grapes (100%).

Straw-colored with relative intensity and bright greenish reflections, it gives elegant and refined olfactory sensations, which refer to an incredible floral potpourri, composed of yellow gorse and lilac wisteria. Pleasant almond notes and mineral hints make their way. The drink - perfectly harmonious - gives a good alcohol content and polite acid tension; the progression refers to the "stony" sensations already caught on the nose, the finish is very clean, long, fruity, citrus and slightly almondy.

Food Pairings
Lugana, when picked in its youth, goes well with fish dishes from both lake and sea: fried anchovies, sea bass and boiled shrimps; the more mature Lugana accompany fatter fish products and more complex preparations: grilled eel, baked tench, peppered mussels, grilled lobsters. If decidedly advanced, it can successfully challenge even white meats such as baked rabbit
