Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, Lungarotti 2015

Lungarotti

I first drank this wine on the Island of Capri, outside one of our favorite hotels at lunch with a burger topped with Mozzarella. It is now one of my favorite wines and an essential each time we return, I try not to share the bottle!! This is one of the wine's that started us thinking about launching Secret Cellar. We visited one of Lungarotti's estates, which is sat at the foot of the beautiful Montefalco village on our visit to Umbria for our Honeymoon and got to taste all the wines the guy's at Lungarrotti produce.

This is a very balanced, full bodie wine that we tend to drink with a beef roast, a burger and ragu. We love the Sagratino grape, its got the established flavours of an "Old vine".

Intresting fact about Sagratino:- seems that the name Sagrantino was given by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia after his precious sacred falcon was saved with a medicine based on Montefalco wine (which at the time was still called Coccorone). Over the centuries, the grape continued to be cultivated in the gardens of the Montefalco monasteries which allowed it to survive the phylloxera epidemic that in the early 20th century destroyed the vineyards in Umbria and all over Italy.

Production area
Montefalco, Umbria. South-west exposure, loose with sandy-clayey texture, limestone subsoil and not very deep

Varieties
100% Sagrantino

Description
A red wine with great richness in polyphenols. Deep and intense purple-red colour with a complex bouquet of red fruits, marasca cherry, currant and raspberry, as well as delicate notes of sweet tobacco and cocoa, finishing off with hints of officinal herbs. The structure is dense with rich but harmonious tannins and wonderful complexity; the fruitiness is sustained by fresh acidity and the finish is long-lasting.

Food Pairings
Perfect match with red meat roasts, suckling pig, game, dishes “alla ghiotta” guinea-hen in civet, stewed venison, sharp cheeses, Umbrian-style squab
